Does an ITIN expire? How to renew it
Yes. An ITIN expires if it isn't used on a US federal tax return at least once in three consecutive tax years. It then expires on 31 December of the third year. Older ITINs issued before 2013 also went through a scheduled expiry, so an old number you haven't used recently may no longer be active.
Do you need to renew?
Only if you need to file a US federal tax return (or you're listed on someone else's return, for example as a spouse or dependant). If you have no US tax filing to do, there's nothing to renew yet.
How renewal works
- Renewal uses the same Form W-7, with the 'Renew an existing ITIN' box ticked and your existing ITIN written on the form.
- You send the same kind of identity documents as for a first application — usually your passport.
- Renewing before you file avoids delays: a return filed with an expired ITIN is processed more slowly, and some credits can be refused until the ITIN is renewed.
TinTax offers ITIN renewal as a separate, lower-priced service, and we remind our customers when their ITIN may be due for renewal.
