Which documents do you need for an ITIN?
The IRS needs to confirm two things: who you are, and that you are not a US citizen or resident (your 'foreign status').
With a passport
A valid passport is the only document that proves both on its own, so it's all most applicants need. It gives your application the best chance of being accepted first time.
Without a passport
You'll need at least two current documents from the IRS list — for example a national ID card, a civil birth certificate, a foreign driver's licence or a US visa. At least one of them normally has to include a photo. Applications without a passport are more likely to be delayed or rejected.
Rules that catch people out
- Documents must be current — expired documents are not accepted.
- Only originals, or copies certified by the agency that issued them. Ordinary photocopies and notarised copies are rejected.
- Names and dates must match exactly across your documents and your W-7.
- When you upload photos, make sure every word is sharp and readable, with no glare.
TinTax's form asks only for the documents that apply to your situation and checks them before anything is filed.
